Powder coating in detail

Powder coating /sintering/

1./ General description:

Powder coating is a heat treatment baked-in painting process. The metal surface can be coated in the desired color.

In Hungary, it spread under the (not very correct) name of sintering.

The following large internal combustion furnaces are also available in our factory.
(length x height x width)
– 6000 x 2750 x 2400 mm
– 8000 x 2200 x 1400 mm
The size of the workpieces must be smaller than the above due to the ability to hang and fasten.

2./ Area of use:

In every place where the goal is

– the appearance of the metal surface in an aesthetic form and in the appropriate color

– protection from environmental effects and weather

– the easy-to-clean surface.

3./ The process of creating the powder coating system:

3.1./ In the case of aluminum products:

3.1.1./ Surface preparation

Degreasing

In an aqueous solution of an acidic or alkaline type of chemical, using a dipping process.

Oxidation

With a low-temperature pickling agent, dipping process.

Formation of conversion layer

Application of a fluorotitanate layer with a thickness of a few microns, using a dipping process.

Drying

3.1.1./ Powder coating

With electrostatic hand sprayer, min. Application of 40 micron layer thickness of epoxy or polyester based powder varnish paint.

3.2./ In the case of steel products:

3.2.1./ Surface preparation

Mechanical cleaning

Granular spraying according to the degree and nature of the surface contamination.

Degreasing

In an aqueous solution of an acid-alkaline type chemical, using a dipping process.

Formation of conversion layer

Application of a layer of iron phosphate with a thickness of a few microns, using a dipping process.

Drying

3.2.2./ Powder coating

With electrostatic hand sprayer, min. Application of 40 micron layer thickness of epoxy or polyester based powder varnish paint.

4./ Guidelines for the design of steel products designed for powder coating:

4.1./ Surface quality:

The surface of the workpiece must be uniform and free from mechanical damage. Surface irregularities, rough sanding marks and dents resulting from production and transport are not removed by the powder coating, but rather accentuated to an increased extent. There is no possibility to repair such errors in the plant.

4.2./ Surface cleanliness:

The powder coating can be applied to a clean metal surface. Our plant undertakes the required level of surface cleaning. Depending on the degree and nature of the pollution, the costs of this are validated in the commitment price.

It is an important aspect that in the case of strong corrosion, plate rust, and rolling rust, after the applied mechanical surface cleaning, the unevenness of the clean metal surface appears to an increased extent.

4.3./ Geometric design:

The suspension and support points required for the powder coating technology must be formed on the workpieces during production or must be marked afterwards. The powder coating will necessarily be incomplete in these places. In the case of large, slender workpieces and frame structures, as well as large-area flat plates, deformation may occur during the powder coating firing.

The customer must ensure that the workpiece can withstand the firing at a maximum temperature of 200 [C] without deformation (stiffening, reinforcement) and that it does not contain any structural parts that could be damaged during heat treatment. The company does not undertake to determine whether the workpiece delivered for powder coating can withstand the heat treatment temperature.

The joints of frame structures made of pipes and closed sections (e.g. doors and windows, railings) must be either completely closed without gaps or definitely open with holes with a diameter of at least 10 mm. Otherwise, the aqueous solution of the surface preparation material will penetrate the interior of the frame structure and cannot drain before powder coating. Liquid leaking from narrow gaps after painting will damage the coating and cause significant aesthetic defects.

4.4./ Welding quality:

The weld seam on the structure intended for powder coating must be completely closed, continuous, solid and free of defects. If the workpiece contains overlaps (e.g. flat steel covers for doors and windows), the edges of the overlapped surfaces must be welded around without gaps or secured by riveting or screwing after painting.

5./ Types of raw materials used in powder coating:
